Temporary closure of Dunford Bridge picnic area

With construction work on our project entering its next phase we will shortly be closing the picnic area next to the Dunford Bridge car park.

Temporarily closing this area will mean we can keep the Trans Pennine Trail open and accessible to everyone while we build a diversion to the Trail which is the same length as the section we are closing.

The new diverted section runs to the north of the River Don and will open up new views of the valley not usually visible to the public.

After our work is finished and the pylons have been removed, we’ll be putting in new seating and landscaping in the picnic area as well improving the car park layout – as you can see from the plan below.

This forms part of an extensive restoration programme will see the area re-planted and restored to encourage greater biodiversity and improved habitats.

The artwork that celebrated the Tour de France is also being carefully stored and will be put back in place when our work is done.

All the activity has been agreed with stakeholders including the Peak District National Park, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the Trans Pennine Trail team and is being carried out in accordance with our planning permission from Barnsley Council.

We are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum and are grateful for everyone’s patience while we transform the landscape.
